Room Additions: Now Is the Time to Upgrade Your Living Space

Has working from home left you thinking about adding room additions to your Houston home? These thoughts are very common in today’s society. Many professionals are now looking to add spaces to their homes to make remote work and online school easier for them and their families.

Online meetings, distraction-free working areas, and places to set out documents are only some of the reasons that a room addition makes sense. When a living space upgrade is what your home needs, then here are some of the best ideas on which rooms to add.

Home office

Add a Home Office as One of Your Houston Room Additions

A home office is more necessary today than at any point in the past. This is also incredibly important if the house will be put up for sale in the next 3-5 years, as many homebuyers are looking for homes with a dedicated office space. Ensuring this space is going to be user-friendly is paramount. It should have ample space for a desk, chairs, seating, storage, and in some instances, an outside entryway.

This allows for the person using the office to step outside to take a call if necessary or for clients to come to the office and discuss business. In most instances, the office should also have a door or set of double doors, that close it off from the rest of the home to keep distractions and noises to a minimum.

Create a Larger Dining Area for Growing Families

Many homes have a kitchen with an eating area nearby. If the family has grown since moving into the home, a larger area to eat may be necessary. Instead of trying to make another room of the housework for a dining room, add a room addition to the space. Many Houston homes were built to hold a family, but not all are built to hold larger families that need more space. Some may even have just a breakfast area instead of a full formal dining room. If this is the case, then adding on an eating area or full dining room could be beneficial.

It is important to consider the size of the furniture going in the space before deciding on the size of the final room. That way, moving around the table, high chairs or chairs pushed out from the table will not be an issue in the final room.

Allow for Easier Entries with a New Mudroom or Laundry Room

Homes, especially homes with kids, often have very cluttered entryways full of shoes, backpacks, deliveries, and miscellaneous items. If this is the case for your home, then consider adding a mudroom that doubles as a laundry room, or a mudroom on its own to the home. With a mudroom, people can come in, take off coats and shoes, store items out of the way, and reduce the clutter in the rest of the home.

This room should be large enough to hold storage items, possibly a washer and dryer, and allow for people to move around without hitting each other. If this is to replace the traditional entryway for the family, then the number of people it can hold is important as families often enter the home at the same time.

Add On a Three or Four Season Porch

Porch

For families that like spending a lot of time outdoors, adding a screened-in porch is a great idea. This room can be set up for use during spring, summer, and fall. It could also be used during winter with the addition of a heat source like a gas fire pit or electric outdoor space heater.

The windows or screens should have the ability to open and close to protect against bad weather and better enjoy good weather. However, there should be screens all around to allow the family to enjoy the space bug-free during those, particularly mosquito-filled times.

Adding In a Guest or In-Law Space

With more and more parents coming to live with their adult children, adding a guest bedroom or an in-law space to the home may be an option worth considering. If the goal is to add an in-law room addition to your Houston home, then make sure health considerations are made during the construction phase. As parents age, their physical health may decline, and mobility may be affected. Having a wheelchair-friendly space in the bedroom and bathroom could make all the difference when making an aging parent comfortable. This should be considered when constructing the floorplan, flooring, and bathroom space for the room addition.
